John Storyk, one of the leading recording studio designers in the world, visited Music Maker’s headquarters recently. He told me about building the studio of Electric Ladyland for Jimi Hendrix. Before it was a studio, it was a blues speakeasy, where the likes of BB King, Albert King, and others performed.

It never ceases to amaze me that the blues is always at the roots of our recording industry. Yet the real rooted blues artists have effectively been denied access to the industry that it helped create.

When I set out to help these artists, I was told, “don’t bother, they don’t exist anymore.” Well, here we are 25 years later, helping so many artists keep the lights on, have some food to eat, and getting opportunities to perform the world over. This has been possible only because of the tremendous generosity of our supporters.

In this collection the songs are about Murder. Some things never change—violent demise is still a common, mind-numbing fact of our lives here in the great old USA. Throughout the history of folk songs, this topic is continually revisited.

I am mighty proud that you appreciate these small releases. As Grammy time rolls around, I am also proud of the nominations for our friends Dom Flemons and Bill Ferris. This is great, great news. It always gives me hope to hear of such amazing achievements by folks like Dom and Bill who have devoted their lives to traditional music.

This boutique series you support has issued another classic recording. I hope it will bring you joy, and give you a feeling of contentment, that you supported something so fine.

The great unending Black River of Music remains deep, wide, and ever flowing.
