The train has been an important source of inspiration in blues songs since the beginning. The trains offered an escape from the Deep South for millions during the Great Migration. Many of our artists have told me stories of hopping trains, and how they would roll up a nice suit of clothes in paper, and when they came to a new town, they would find a ditch with water, clean up, roll out their clothes, change, and be looking clean as they asked a local, “Where do the black folks live?” They would head off, find a drink house, pull out their guitar, make some change, meet a friend, stay awhile, get a job as a fry cook. Then, when they got in mind to move on, they would walk back to the train yards and head on down the line.

Cora Mae Bryant remembered her dad, Curley Weaver, walk the family from their home deep in the country to railroad track. When a train would come into view, her dad would wave a white handkerchief and wave down a train, load the family on, and off they would go. This story is hard for me to understand or imagine in today’s world.

Everything changes, life moves fast, trains are still rolling. They continue to capture our imagination. Train songs to me are American music at its deepest.
