about

Dear Listener’s Circle,

Music Maker 25! What an amazing beginning for an incredible year! Our new book, Blue Muse, and the accompanying album have already received critical acclaim. The opening of our exhibit at the New Orleans Museum of Art with a public art component opens April 25. This is all just amazing.

This journey started in 1991 a few years before our founding in 1994. I was running around Winston-Salem, NC in an old Ford van with bluesman Guitar Gabriel. I soon met incredible artists such as Macavine Hayes, Preston Fulp, Mr. Q, and Willa Mae Buckner. In 1992, 81-year-old country bluesman Preston Fulp (who had not left his county since 1941), Guitar Gabriel, Macavine Hayes, and I drove to Charleston, SC to perform at a Blues Bash.

Upon arrival we soon were performing with a French one-man Blues band artist named Benjamin Tehoval. We all became fast friends, and Benjamin spent a week with us when we were not performing—going out to eat, driving around town, and sitting in parking lots waiting for Guitar Gabriel and Macavine to remerge from wherever they disappeared.

Benjamin and I became quite good friends, and he truly believed in the mission we were developing. He arranged shows for us in Switzerland, France, and Germany. These were small tours with artists such as Guitar Gabriel, Cootie Stark, and Neal Pattman. These tours lead eventually to our relationship with Dixie Frog Records, where we issued 17 records, and sold tens of thousands of CDs before the demise of the record industry.

Benjamin is an artist. His interpretations of American Blues classics are all his own. The French have been a welcoming port for African American musicians—they deeply feel and treasure the music from the American South. I was just thinking of Music Maker’s long and deep friendships with this country, and thought I would share this hidden gem in our Music Maker catalog.

With warm regards,

Timothy Duffy
