about

When I first moved to North Carolina, I would go to a fiddler’s convention every weekend in the summer. I soon connected with Benton Flippen who lived just up the road and was an expert old time fiddler, playing in the Round Peak style.

We often had picnics where we would eat, drink and play music all day. None of us were expert old time musicians like Benton, but we all loved to try and play music with him. He would play bluesier as Macavine Hayes strummed along in another key or Captain Luke played some jaw hard and hum. We just had fun.

From Mount Airy, North Carolina, Benton learned from his father, uncles and brothers, who were all accomplished old time banjo pickers. Benton performed with the Camp Creek Boys and the Smokey Valley Boys before receiving the NC Folk Heritage Award in 1990.

Years later when Benton was in his late 80s, he had no one putting out his records anymore. We recorded and released two and this third one was never released as he had fallen ill.

Benton is here in fine form with his blue ribbon festival group.
