about

I met Johnny Taylor Moore in Macon, Mississippi through the blues legend and community organizer Willie King. Willie had just started his Freedom Creek Blues Festival and Music Maker was very involved in helping Willie get it off the ground. As part of our support, Music Maker would sponsor any of Willie's friends that played the old blues in his community.

Of those friends, Johnny Taylor Moore was my favorite. He talked in a deep dialect that made me wish for another time. His music was deep too—at first it sounds like early John Lee Hooker. There is a very early version of "She Caught the Katie" that is perhaps the very roots of the song Taj Mahal so famously did on his first record.

Johnny attempted to come down to North Carolina to record, but was thwarted by an ice storm, but I eventually managed to get down to visit Johnny and made this session.

Of course I wish I had more days to work with him and I wish the guitar were tuned a bit better, but to me this recording is a glimpse into a blues that you would be very hard pressed to find today.
