about

This is a very special recording that I have kept very close since I recorded it as a kid of 19 years old living in Mombasa, Kenya studying oud under Zein Al Abdein.

Referred to locally with the honorific Ustadh, Zein was a central figure for more than six decades in the genre of sung Swahili poetry known as taarab. Zein was never formally taught—he learned by seeing, listening, asking questions and studying recordings.

I was in Kenya with Zein from ages 18-23 and in a sense I grew up there. Zein taught me deep lessons on music, ancient theories of the music of the spheres. His music was a tremendous source of inner peace in my life. In my wake, a flood of record companies and ethnomusicologists followed, garnering him international attention.

Zein and I remained very close until the day he passed. This recording I am sharing with you is a lesson tape on how to play the oud I recorded. In this recording Zein plays maquams, which are Arabic scales that he would improvise on. It is a very peaceful recording.
