about

As a blind keyboard player from Greensboro, North Carolina, Skeeter Brandon had an illustrious career—starting in church as a child to eventually backing singer Clarence Carter in the 70’s. During this period with Carter, Skeeter (then called Cal Brandon) cut a 45 with the Swampers in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. “I Kept on Smilin” is absolute soul gold with Young Skeet’s fervor in prime form, backed by a band that defined perfection. The B side “24 Hour Love Man” is equally righteous. Those two ultra rare tracks are included here.

I became close to Skeeter in the early 1990’s when we played many of the same festivals and clubs in the Southeast blues circuit—Skeeter was with his group Highway 61 and I was touring with Guitar Gabriel. I invited Skeeter and his group to come up to the Music Maker studio, where we recorded these four previously unissued songs.

20 years later, Skeeter’s voice is still just as strong. Ranging in styles from the roadhouse boogie anthem “Get Loaded” to the deep blues of “Blues Hang-over,” Skeeter shows a mastery of styles that only decades of sweating over a keyboard in a cloud of nicotine and the reek of alcohol can produce.
